Almond Cherry

It’s a smoothie morning, and today I came up with this combination of ingredients that, in my humble opinion, is simply fantastic!

Almonds, cherries, coconut and a hint of chocolate…

These flavours work so well together in desserts, that I was pretty sure they would make a delicious smoothie.

I wanted the almond flavour to be the star here, so I went easy on the cherries, since using just a couple adds a lot of flavour. Of course, if you’re wanting a big cherry burst of flavour go ahead and add more.

That’s the beauty of smoothies, you can mix it up any way you wish!

I enjoyed it for breakfast, but don’t you think it would also make an excellent snack to beat that dreaded afternoon slump?

PS…A note about almond butter…yes you can buy it ready-made (it’s not cheap, but it’s very smooth). You can also easily make yourself. It really is as simple as processing a cup of almonds in your food processor for about 5 minutes or until the almonds form a smooth paste (not as smooth as store-bought but just as delicious). Another good option is to buy it at your local Bulk Barn where you press it yourself and buy only as much as you need (it’s very fresh tasting, really good!).

1 frozen banana, cut in chunks
3/4 cup skim milk or almond milk
1 container (100g) Oikos Greek Cherry Yogurt (sub with vanilla yogurt and 3 fresh or frozen, pitted cherries)
1 1/2 heaping tbsps almond butter
1 tbsp unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tsp ground flax
1 tsp cacao nibs
1 tsp pure maple syrup


Place all ingredients in blender cup and process until smooth.

Pour into a glass, add a straw and enjoy!
